Orange County Police Sheriff Carl DuBois issued an alert this week warning of a possible scam made by individuals claiming to be a representative of the Sheriff’s Office Civil Division. Earlier this month, DuBois said a similar scam was run in Cayuga County, with a caller claiming to be a representative from their Sheriff’s Office.

DuBois said that the Orange County Sheriff’s Office will never contact individuals by phone about court-ordered judgements, nor will they seek payment from a pre-paid credit card or wire transfer. He also said his office will not ask for a credit card number over the phone.

“Disregard any call from someone demanding cash payment and do not give out personal identifying information over the phone,” he stated. “If you receive a suspicious phone call that you’d like to report, contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office by calling 911.”
